After only one season of awarding its championship to the driver who finished highest among the top-four in the standings going into its final race of the season, the Dirt Track World Championship at Eldora Speedway, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series has announced a change in the format that will be used to determine the 2024 titlist. Instead of a winner-take-all system being used to decide the season-long victor, a seven-race Big River Steel Chase for the Championship will again feature the top-four in the standings racing it out for glory.

When the Brad Sweet and Kyle Larson-owned High Limit Sprint Car Series purchased the All Star Circuit of Champions for the purpose of expanding its schedule beyond the midweek tour it had been in 2023, it became apparent that there would be a competition for tracks, dates and drivers with the more established World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series. And that new found rivalry has come to the forefront in this form of motorsports all throughout the current off-season.

This will likely not be one of the most popular blogs I have ever written, but then again, it is not really my job to simply write what will be considered popular. Rather, the purpose of being a blogger is to lay out an opinion then to provide evidence to defend that opinion.

Over the past couple of seasons there has been a major influx of money into the top level of Dirt Late Model racing. There are more purses paying out $50,000 or more to the winner than has ever been the case in the history of this form of motorsports.

Could the current Sprint Car rivalry spill into the Late Model world?
Part of the dirt racing world has turned into a bit of a battleground as what are now two competing Sprint Car tours appear to be locked into a competition for drivers, tracks, and dates with the 2024 season looming in the distance. The longstanding World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series finds itself in the somewhat unfamiliar territory of having to fight with an upstart rival which brings a considerable amount of clout to the dispute.

In a press release sent out on Monday(11-27-23) it was revealed that the Midwestern-based American Late Model Series(ALMS) has been given new life after lying dormant for the past two seasons. Sam Driggers, the owner of that series, is bringing it back to life as part of his purchase of and merger with the Valvoline Iron-Man Series. The new tour will be labeled as the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series.
The team that has fielded Dirt Late Models for Earl Pearson Jr. since the end of the 2021 season is apparently closing its doors. The NextGen(or Gen 7) car was introduced into NASCAR Cup Series competition at the beginning of the 2022 season. Within the seasons of its existence, Hendrick Motorsports has won a total of 21 races with Joe Gibbs Racing running second in those totals with 14 triumphs. And in the statistic that shows teams are meeting their initial goal for each season, HMS and JGR lead all organizations with a total of six drivers each qualifying for the NASCAR Playoffs with a chance to win the championship.
There are still a few races remaining on the 2023 Dirt Late Model racing schedule, including the XR Super Series events at All-Tech Raceway and the Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, but the season is quickly drawing to a close. As many who follow this sport know, the term off-season is a misnomer in that the work for the next campaign begins almost immediately after the previous year ends, or even before. As a result, many drivers and teams are already preparing the cars they will be putting to use when their first race of 2024 rolls around.
